I think there's little difference in terms of elevation gain/loss. The changes are probably just for the benefit of local traffic. The first 10 miles of the course is still uphill. The change to run along the west side of the Hwy 13 is a little more even I'd say which might make it slightly easier though that section, and I think that side is a bit nicer. There's some views to be had right after Park Blvd and then you run alongside the top end of Sausal Creek which is quite nice. After that it's houses on one side and freeway the other until you get to the temple. The main downhill is still there that people didn't like. I don't know about the change to Coolidge, because Fruitvale is a fun stretch to run along so I guess that's for local traffic reasons too.

Overall I'm glad they kept the course much the same. It's really a great course.

Thanks for your analysis of Oakland vs. SF profiles. Do you have an opinion on the 2011 version of the course?

It would be interesting to see the Napa course too, since runners are often choosing between these two March races.

Good luck on your part-time activities.

Sincerely,
Craig Newport
